Kobe

21 November 2008

Okay. I don't really mean that. But, good lord almighty, Kobe needs to learn how to play within the flow of the offense. 23 shots? Really? He shot twice as many shots as anyone else on the team

This is an awesome little video of Kobe trash talking Sasha. Looks like both are feeling a lot better. Which is good news.

With Shaq, Kobe and Malone, they are going to get a ton of calls because that trio is a matchup nightmare. Throw in Payton and forget it. And yet, if you look, the Lakers, with that foursome, still only had 25 more fouls go their way—that’s ALL season—than the Jazz.

I remember hearing Kobe haters question what Iverson could have done if he had been the one to play with Shaq instead of Bryant. Well, this would give him his shot. Sure, Shaq’s past his prime, but Amare’s the next big thing. This doesn’t fix the Suns’ defensive shortcomings, but as long as they have Shaq and Amare, those shortcomings will never be fixed. AI gives the Suns a go-to clutch performer who can get his own shot in any and every situation. Something Nash couldn’t do. Plus, Iverson is great at lobs, and would have plenty of opportunities in this offense. Plus, they’d get Kleiza, who could work to spell Grant Hill and could also spread the floor with his outside shooting.

ears.  I know there still are plenty of MJ-lovers (myself included) and there are just as many Kobe-lovers as well.  I know Kobe's career is a long way from over.  I know that he's gonna re-write the record books (as will Lebron).  I know he scored 80-something in a game.  He's the best player in the NBA right now.  But come on!!  Saying he's better than Michael Jordan?

Kobe’s shot wasn’t falling, and he got hammered on several drives and didn’t get the calls. Sure, he went to the freethrow line 15 times, but there were at least two calls where he took it hard to the hole and got hit by multiple defenders. Nothing.

They also now know his name.

And then there’s Kobe. Yes, the same Kobe who has not yet “earned” an MVP in his career. His numbers are down, but there is no doubt he is what makes the Lakers go. Now that he’s finally started to trust in his teammates even when they fail has created a new chemistry that at long stretches during games looks and feels unbeatable.

What had Mr. Bryant so riled? A non-call actually. Going up for an offensive rebound, Kobe thought (and, to his credit, the replay showed a great deal of contact) that he deserved a call. Referee Brian Forte saw it differently, and after

I have to admit, karma is a foul, unsavory witch. Kobe complained this offseason. Wanted to be moved. Was frustrated with his team mates. Then  didn’t get his way. He came into this season fired up and ready to roll, played his heart out like he always does. The Lakers got off to great start before karma kicked out her leg and tripped up the Lakeshow by sending Bynum to the injured reserve for at least 2 months.

There was the foul in the second quarter where Kobe let Dwayne Wade know that basketball indeed is a physical game. The offense had broken down and Kobe was taking it to the hoop. As he made his move to get past Wade, he extended his right forearm and popped Wade square on the chin with his elbow. He was rightfully called for an offensive foul and Wade rubbed his chin and played it cool. But the message was clear.

edenko).

Then he moved out East, after a huge blowup—not so much over Kobe’s alpha dog status as it was over the 30 million he wanted Buss to pay him for the next 3 years. Well, Buss said hell no and made the right choice to stick with Bryant, whose selfish tendencies often overshadowed his unrelenting desire to get better. Every year

Sure, Turiaf missed what turned out to be critical free throw. Yeah, Kobe turned the ball over a career high 11 times. But the Lakers went into The Palace, a place they haven’t won in over five years, and nearly beat the second (arguably) best team in the East without Bynum, Mihm, Ariza, or Walton. In fact, they had the game won needing only a rebound to secure the victory. Unfortunately, Tayshaun Prince got his shot off and hit the winning bucket.

Things aren’t as glum as they might first appear. We still have Kobe (which used to be all we needed). We still have a healthy and motivated Odom. We’ve got the confidence and big game shooting of Fish (see how much he helps? Last night, in crunch time, he hit some key baskets, big ones—that runner in the lane for the and-one, to help edge out the Grizz).

Just ask Suns, Jazz and Hornets fans. Kobe is sharing. D-Fish is leading. Odom is balling. So why, oh why am I saying to keep the $9 million, bust-of-a-draft-pick, injury-prone, stone-handed, noose named Kwame Brown?

h sense as all black attire with a little red and white bowtie.

Every single man out there, Kobe included, looked extremely uncomfortable. And they played miserably too. Kobe shot a putrid 6 for 25. Odom added a 6 for 17 night. Fish was 4 for 10 (though he did have that crazy last second shot at the end of the first half). And Bynum played only 22 minutes and fouled out.

19 December 2007

Everyone but Kobe had given up. You could see it in their lack of hustle, lack of fire. Lamar had every reason to mail it in as well. He was playing with a torn labrum in his shoulder, a hyper-extended elbow and a heavy heart from the death of his son.

But numbers don’t tell the whole tale.

It’s well known that he and Kobe were buds and remained in contact even after he left for Golden State. Drafted in the same class, the two spent their first 8 seasons together, won three championships and have kept in contact through text messages over the course of the past few seasons and playoffs.

13 December 2007

Hmm.

Kobe’s been having a sub-par year in comparison to his last few, but after taking 27 shots per game in 2006 and 23 last year, he’s down to 20. He’s getting guys involved, though his average assists don't paint the whole picture. Just watch him actually look for—sometimes like a hawk zeroing in on its prey—Andrew Bynum.
